What is Ayurveda?

Introduction

Ayurveda, which literally means the knowledge and wisdom of life, is the traditional healing system of India.  Often called the mother of all healing, it originated in India over 5000 years ago.

Along with the potential to heal chronic diseases, Ayurveda promises to improve health and increase longevity.

Ayurveda is considered the healing side of Yoga. Both Ayurveda and Yoga strive to help a person re-connect to their true nature through direct experience.  Together, they encompass a complete approach to the well-being of the body, the mind and the spirit.

Ayurveda views health as the end result of how we interact with our environment.  Harmonious interactions lead to health while disharmonious interactions lead to disease.  Ayurveda is the science of developing greater harmony with our environment through all of our senses.

Your inner nature is called your constitution or Prakruti. This unique balance of energy was determined at the moment of conception and is with you for the rest of your life. It determines what is in harmony with your nature and what will cause you to become out of balance, sick and diseased. Knowledge of your constitution is essential to developing optimal health.

The Three Doshas

Your constitution is the fundamental and unique balance of three basic energies called doshas.  They are Vata, Pitta and Kapha.  The balance in each individual is different : hence, each individual has his or her own special set of challenges and gifts.

For this reason, no tow persons are identical and each person's path towards optimal health is unique.

The Vata dosha is made up of the elements of air and ether. This means that it has the qualities that are similar to these elements.  Vata is very much like the wind - it is light, cool, dry and mobile. Those with a Vata constitution will tend to be light, have thin bones and dry skin and hair. When out of balance they may lose weight, become constipated and have weaknesses  in their immune and nervous system.

The Pitta dosha is made up of the elements of fire and water.  Pitta, therefore, tends to be hot, sharp and penetrating. They tend to have moderate weight and good musculature.  When out of balance, they tend towards diarrhea, infections, skin rashes and  weaknesses in the liver, spleen and blood.

The Kapha dosha is made up of the elements of water and earth. Kapha tends to be cool, moist, stable and heavy. When out of balance, Kapha individuals are prone to weight gain and tend to have weaknesses in their lungs and sinuses.

Ayurveda treats not only the physical body or just symptoms but Ayurveda treats the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual body. Therefore Ayurveda treats the patient as a whole.

All of our products have been carefully formulated and chosen to restore the body back to it's balanced state, ensuring optimum health and well-being.

About me

Hello Friends

I am Dr. Arlini Singh, an Ayurvedic Doctor and this is my story.....

I was not always an Ayurvedic Doctor and to be honest, I had only got to know about Ayurveda for the first time in my life in my thirties.

Growing up, it was my passion to be attorney and I had put myself through law school and then opened up my own law practice and was highly successful and happy. But then life happens ....

Fast forward to 2014, I awoke one morning covered in a horrible rash. It was red and ugly and very, very uncomfortable. As much as I tried to avoid scratching myself insanely, I just could not help myself. A visit to the dermatologist, confirmed that it was contact dermatitis, - which means that my skin was reacting to something that it had recently been in contact with. We put it down to a reaction to my laundry detergent as the rash was everywhere on my body, except the areas that are not covered by my clothes i.e. my face, hands and feet.

The dermatologist put me on Prednisone, which is medication used to suppress the immune system as the doctor believed that the immune system was over reacting to the detergent. However, Prednisone left me almost bedridden for the next 6 weeks. I was unable to get out of bed, unable to move, unable to even keep my head on my shoulders. I had no energy. Was just completely fatigued.

A little about myself here - I am a very active person. A go-getter. I can hardly even remember taking days off when I was sick and here I was the complete opposite of what I am normally like. I was worried and dead scared. What was happening to me?

At the insistence of my family, I was taken to the ER. Huge mistake but I didn't know that at the time. After a long wait, the ER physician, who it was evident, didn't know what to make of me, gave me a script for antibiotics. His reasoning was that as Prednisone suppresses the body's immune system, my body is now opened to all types of bacteria, so I rather protect myself with antibiotics.

We all know what antibiotics do to the body. So I didn't want to even buy the medication. Deeply disappointed, I went home - hoping to get answers but instead being so disappointed with the the treatment that I was receiving.

Back in my bed, with nothing to do but stare at the ceiling in despair, I decided to look for answers online.

And that is when I stumbled across Ayurveda.

I had never came across anything like Ayurveda. I was elated. I read as much as I could and the very same day, I decided that I wanted to study and practice Ayurveda and help others who were going through the frustration that I was going through and not getting answers.

According to Ayurveda, my reaction to my laundry detergent which I had been using for the last 20 years was due to a low immune system due to the recent stresses in my life. Neither the dermatologist nor the ER physician had even discussed stress or my diet or lifestyle with me. They both had treated just the symptoms only.

Ayurveda states that we all are unique and as such our medical treatment should be customized to our unique bodily constitution. A one size fits all approach in health care simply does not work. Treating symptoms only is unacceptable.

Studying Ayurveda, also opened up, to me the amazing world of herbs that heal. This is so fascinating. Medicine is in our food, our herbs, our plants, our lifestyle. We are all entitled to optimum health and Mother Nature, like a true mother has provided us with everything that we need.
