Grounding Through August's Seasonal Shift
August’s breezy shift stirs Vata’s restlessness, but let’s embrace summer’s abundant berries and peaches to ground our body and soul! These juicy treasures, bursting with flavor, anchor us in Ayurveda’s nourishing embrace. Try our delicious recipe to balance Pitta's heat and Vata's airy energy. Here's the recipe .....
Blend 1 cup coconut milk (grounding, moistens Vata's dryness, cools Pitta's heat), with
⅓ cup strawberries (sweet, cooling, soothes Pitta),
⅓ cup blueberries (sweet, antioxidant- rich, stabilizies Vata)
⅓ cup diced peaches (sweet, juicy, cools Pitta)
¼ tsp ground cardamon (warming, without being overheating, balances all 3 doshas)
1 tsp maple sugar or honey (sweet, grounding, balances Vata and Pitta, with honey balancing all 3 doshas)
You can vary the recipe by adding in any berries of your choice. Both berries and peaches go bad very quickly, so this is an excellent recipe to prevent fruits going to waste. You can even stir in 1 tbsp chia seeds (moist, grounding, adds hydration) and let sit for 5 minutes. You could even blend a portion of the fruits and leave the rest as bite-sized pieces in your drink.
Serve chilled for Pitta dosha and at room temperature for Vata and Kapha dosha.

An Interesting Fact
Did you know that the tongue is a reflection of the body upside down? Dr. Singh examines the tongue at each visit. A quick tongue check can guide your health. Look for redness, or a thick coating, signalling excess Pitta heat or toxins in the body or cracks and dryness, indicating Vata imbalance - all common as August shifts from fiery heat to windy coolness. This simple tool, paired with your dosha knowledge, helps you adjust your practices to stay balanced until autumn's embrace.
Preparing Parents for Back to School Season
As the back-to-school season nears, August’s windy shift can heighten Vata’s restlessness in children, leading to scattered focus or disrupted sleep. Support their transition with a calming bedtime routine—warm baths with a drop of lavender oil, gentle storytelling, and a fun, relaxing foot massage with Sleep Easy Oil after the bath to bond and soothe, followed by an ashwagandha latte or turmeric latte as a nightcap.
Our Sleep Easy Oil, is made in-house, in small batches, using top quality Ayurvedic herbs, that gently pacifies and rejuvenates the nervous system for restful sleep, while the lattes - whether ashwagandha for grounding Vata or turmeric for cooling Pita - eases the shift from summer’s late nights to a school routine.
After the latte, enjoy a brief 5 minute guided relaxation with soft music to deepen calm and reinforce the new routine, nurturing immunity and balance for all ages.
Ayurvedic Insights : Menopause in Late Summer
As August’s windy shift stirs Vata and retains Pitta’s heat, menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and insomnia may intensify. Support your body with Ashwagandha Latte to ground Vata, and practice a 5-minute evening Abhyanga—using Vata Massage Oil for Vata’s dryness or Pitta Massage Oil for Pitta’s heat—to calm both doshas.
For a soothing twist, dilute 1 tsp of rose water in 2 tsp water for a forehead compress, its cooling aroma easing tension uniquely. Avoid heavy meals to prevent build up of toxins (ama), favouring light, warm foods. These practices ease the transition, nurturing rest and balance as summer wanes.
Community Corner : Your Ayurvedic Questions Answered
This month, Maya T. from Waterdown asks, " Dr. Arlini Singh, how can we ease dry skin from August's windy weather?
Maya, thank you for the question. The cooling windy shift stirs Vata dosha, drying skin and causing irritation and discomfort. Soothe your skin with a daily moisturizing routine - apply Vata Massage Oil after a shower, massaging gently for about 3 minutes and drink plenty of warm water with a lemon slice and 1/4 tsp of ghee to hydrate from within. For an extra touch, add a humidfier to your home to retain moisture. These steps nourish your skin's natural balance, keeping you comfortable as the season shifts.
Quotation
"Only when we allow our suffering to liberate us can we become liberated from suffering. Suffering is the breaking of the boundaries of the known and the familiar. If we are open to the truth of it, suffering cleanses and transforms us."
